The big winter storm barreling down on the Midwest today forced closing of some credit union offices in a number of states with both the Texas Credit Union League and the Missouri Credit Union Association shutting down operations, though St. Louis-based Missouri Corporate CU remained open.
In an e-mail sent out early this morning, the Texas League said because of weather conditions including snow, sleet and ice storms in the area, its Dallas offices will not open.
The Missouri Credit Union Association also said it was closing for the day but its processing subsidiary would continue to handle CU business as would Missouri Corporate.
"Weather conditions will be monitored and in the event of additional closings, readers will be notified," the Texas League said.
"We are closing early because of the blizzard," said a spokesman for the $1.6 billion First Community CU, St. Louis' largest.
The wintry conditions forced cancellation of more than 600 flights at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport while parts of southwest Missouri already had 6 inches of snow by 8 a.m. About 3,000 were without power in Ohio.
A spokeswoman for the Kansas Credit Union Association in Wichita said the bad weather may still force a closing later today, though item processsing would continue as long as the Federal Reserve offices remain open.
