A day after its CEO, William Cheney, was designated as the new head of CUNA, the California/Nevada Credit Union League was making plans to find a replacement.
It has appointed a search committee headed by its immediate past league chairman, Brett Martinez.
A statement from the current league chairman, Jeff York, president/CEO of CoastHills FCU, Lompoc, said the executive search committee would begin the recruiting process in line with Cheney's July 5 appointment to the CUNA job.
Martinez, who also is president/CEO of Redwood CU, Santa Rosa, said "most likely we will be using an outside search firm since we want to rely on the experts." And he said the league looks "to a smooth transition" but the CEO job may not be filled by the July 5 date adding "so we will be relying on CUNA and Bill to help carry us through in the interim."
Though Cheney's name had been bandied as a possible successor to Dan Mica, Martinez said he found it "within 5 to 10 minutes of the announcement just like everybody else."
"Our big loss is CUNA's gain," said the Santa Rosa CU executive. He said the league "will be looking for the best candidate." Martinez said the first job now "is to get the search committee appointed," a task which is to begin early next week. Serving under Cheney while he begins making the Washington move is Mark Klinkert, chief operating officer.
