President Obama plans to propose a salary freeze for certain presidential appointees and that could affect the salary of the three NCUA Board members and some of the eight political appointees at the agency.
Obama, who is expected to unveil his proposal to freeze the salary of 1,200 political appointees and ban the payment of bonuses to highly paid appointees in tonight's State of the Union speech, can freeze the salaries of any of the eight political appointees at the NCUA by executive order.
However, the salaries of the three board members are set by Congress and lawmakers and would have to approve a freeze as part of the appropriations process.
Past freezes have affected those appointees who earn more than $100,000 annually.
NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz receives an annual salary of $162,900. NCUA Board Members Michael Fryzel and Gigi Hyland have annual salaries of $153,200.
