Houston-based People's Trust Federal Credit Union is charting new ground next week: making plans to open its first stand-alone branch in a former and abandoned Washington Mutual-now Chase Bank-branch.

The $420 million People's, the former Shell Employees FCU, which had limited facilities in sponsor offices, said the groundbreaking ceremonies for the soon-to-be refurbished branch on Sage Road is slated for Dec. 17. The branch is scheduled to open in April.

"We were able to acquire the property several months ago at a very nice price," said Patsy Jalomo, business development and marketing manager.

People's, which has six other branches, said the "historic groundbreaking" comes as the CU celebrates 75 years. The stand-alone unit represents the newest phase in People's expansion under a long term strategy calling for five new branches in five years.
