WASHINGTON — CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference, to be held Feb. 22-26 at the Washington Convention Center here, is already bringing a host of celebrities to its agenda.
Forbes Inc. President/CEO Steve Forbes, editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine and former Republican presidential candidate, and actor-musician Gary Sinise will be among those featured at CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference.
Forbes will offer an economic commentary while Sinise will open the conference performing in a concert with the Lt. Dan Band, formed by him and Chicago composer Kimo William. Sinise stars in "CSI: New York" and was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Lieutenant Dan in the 1994 film "Forrest Gump."
At the conference, MSNBC Senior Correspondent Tucker Carlson and CNN contributor and former Democratic consultant Paul Begala will face off over current developments in national news, politics and world issues.
The GAC brings together top policy makers from Congress, the administration, the federal regulatory agencies and the Washington political establishment to provide the latest information on legislation and regulation affecting credit unions. The conference also devotes an afternoon for attendees to visit their senators and representatives on Capitol Hill.

BSA Filings Must Be Electronic By Dec. 31
WASHINGTON — Credit unions must make all their Bank Secrecy Act compliance filings electronically beginning Dec. 31, 2008.
The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) is retiring the BSA magnetic media filing program because electronic filing is more secure.
BSA e-filing is more secure, cost-efficient and user-friendly, according to the agency.
E-filing uses a Web-based system that is user-ID and password protected and does not require storage media. It supports the filing of both single and multiple BSA reports and uses the same file format as the magnetic media program. Unlike the current system, there are no tapes or diskettes to mail.
FinCEN is collaborating with the IRS to ensure this transition is as seamless as possible. Financial institutions currently using the magnetic media program to file BSA reports can register to use BSA e-filing at any time. Filers can access details on registration and see an overview of BSA e-filing at http://bsaefiling.fincen.treas.gov/index.jsp or contact the BSA e-filing help desk at 888-827-2778 (option 6) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
