BEAUMONT, Texas — For scores of hurricane-battered Louisiana and Texas credit unions, backup generators turned into key life savers Monday and in a city of 100,000 like this without power a generator was indeed a business luxury.

"We have about six of us that came in today and we're able to answer the phones and do business from our call center but the doors remain closed," said Scott Sims, vice president of information services for the $200 million Education First CU of Beaumont.

Shared branching has served the CU well during a difficult time, said Sims noting that an assessment is being made of damage to the CU's three offices including one in Orange, a hard hit coastal town.

Southwest Corporate Credit Union in Dallas said it was "in the process of taking inventory" of exactly what impacted CUs like Education First and others in Texas and Louisiana might need whether it be relocation services or alternative cash sources.
