BASKING RIDGE, N.J. — Verizon Wireless this week began promoting the availability of mobile banking on some of its popular BlackBerrys and Get It Now-capable phones, and two credit unions are among the financial institutions partnering with the telecommunications giant to provide it.

The Verizon Wireless customers must bank with Utah's America First Credit Union or Seattle-based BECU on the credit unions side, or Wachovia, Regions, SunTrust, USAA, Synovus, Arvest, Bancorp South, FirstBank or South Financial on the for-profit banking side to use the service.

Capabilities include account balance and transaction history, transfers and bill pay. Verizon Wireless and the financial institutions are using the mobile banking platform from Qualcomm subsidiary Firethorn.
