South Division Credit Union, Evergreen Park, Ill., is hosting a free community shred event on June 26. South Division is encouraging members to bring in up to three banker's size boxes of unwanted personal documents to shred. Also, as part of the statewide credit union consumer education drive I Belong South Division will distribute information about protection from identity theft. One family will also win a free heavy-duty home shredder.

Retail Employees Credit Union, Atlanta, teamed up with its Macy's members to volunteer at the Atlanta Food Bank. Volunteers were in charge of inspecting food and verifying expiration dates. The food collected is distributed to homeless shelters, churches and individuals of modest means.

GFA Federal Credit Union, Gardner, Mass., held a color contest through its school-banking program for National Credit Union Youth Week and has displayed all of the winning pictures at the Gardner locations. The theme for the contest was Got Green? Grow it at GFA! and the contest asked students to color a picture showing what they wanted to grow their savings for. Each student who colored a picture was given a special packet of money tree seeds. The students submitting the best drawings from each school were given a $2 bill and $2 was deposited in their account. Gilberto Cuevas of Gardner colored the grand prize winning picture and was awarded $1,000 Savings Bond. His picture said I want to grow my savings because: I want to be a teacher when I grow up.

Numerica Credit Union, Spokane, Wash., had a group of 21 Student Trak members and two parents volunteer at Spokane's Second Harvest warehouse to sort food donations. The event was coordinated by Numerica for teen members who have Student Trak accounts. Numerica planned team challenges, a tour of the facility and gave away prizes. Second Harvest procures, manages and supplies food donations to food banks through out the Inland Northwest.

Pacific Service Credit Union, Fresno, Calif., partnered with 10 community organizations for spring into safety day. The event was held in Pacific Services' Fresno branch and community room. The day featured free DNA LifePrint kits, biometric fingerprinting, child safety journals and child safety information. Nurses from Children's Hospital Central California assisted in taking DNA samples and several community partners offered health and safety information that included Fresno Police Mounted Patrol, a police K-9 unit, the Fresno Police Activities League, Boy Scouts of America Sequoia Council, Girl Scouts of Fresno, Central Valley Indian Health, American Ambulance, Red Cross and the Water Safety Council of Fresno.

Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, Philadelphia, employees participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The employees were part of thousands of volunteers that ran in the race dedicated to ending breast cancer. Employees met and had their picture taken with Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter who also participated in the events. PFCU has participated in the race for the cure event for more than 10 years.

Altura Credit Union, Riverside, Calif., had a special giveaway to honor Altura's 50th anniversary. As part of its year-long celebration every member of Altura was entered to win one of three deluxe trips to Hawaii. Each of the winning members and their guest received round-trip airfare, hotel, airport transfers and a lei greeting for an eight-day trip to Oahu, Hawaii. The winners were Maggie Marquez-Falcon, Lorena Urzual and Edgar Marroquin-Barrietos.

Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union, Scranton, Pa., provided free hotdogs and refreshments to participants in the Children's Advocacy Center moonlight run/walk. The annual events benefits child victims of physical and sexual abuse and neglect. The event included a children's fun run, face painting and educational tables. The Children's Advocacy Center provides medical assessment and treatment of abused children, reduces the trauma of abuse and promotes prevention education.

Point Loma Credit Union, Temecula, Calif., held a free concert by Chaparall High School's string orchestra at its Temecula branch. Chaparall High School's string orchestra is the only string orchestra in Riverside County and the orchestra was awarded first place and a national gold rating at the National Music Meritage held last March in San Francisco.

Service Plus Credit Union, Riverside, Calif., employees Sharilyn Hunke, America Burgess and Crystal Rolling visited Highland Elementary School for Read Across America. This is the fifth year that Service Plus has visited the school to read to the children. Read Across America is held annually to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Service Plus employees read to over 450 children, donated Dr. Seuss books to all the class libraries and shared pencils and financially literacy coloring books with 17 classrooms.
