EUGENE, Ore. -- The Credit Union Association of Oregon has named long-time SELCO Community Credit Union board volunteer Betty James as the Volunteer of the Year for 2007.

James has been a SELCO volunteer since 1993, when she joined the supervisory committee for the credit union.

Her notable accomplishments include her repeated visits to Washington, D.C. for credit-union advocacy visits to federal lawmakers; her continuing education, including earning the much-coveted Credit Union Development Educator designation; her dedicated service on a number of SELCO committees, as well as twice serving as SELCO board chair; and her distinguished career as a business educator at Lane Community College and a volunteer for a number of civic organizations.

"We are very proud of Betty's accomplishments on behalf of our cooperative. Her advocacy for SELCO, and for the credit union movement both state- and nationwide, is very impressive. Dedicated volunteers like Betty are very rare, and help distinguish credit unions from other types of financial institutions," said SELCO CEO Bob Newcomb.

The CUAO Distinguished Service Award "Volunteer of the Year" recognizes credit union volunteers for their outstanding accomplishments, time and effort in support and promotion of the credit union idea. Nominees are evaluated based on their achievements for their individual credit unions, contributions to the CUAO and its chapters, positions of leadership and exceptional service to community or civic organizations, and professional development and continuing-education efforts.
