RALEIGH, N.C. — As a testament to its statewide presence, more than 700 members from around North Carolina attended State Employees' Credit Union's recent annual meeting.
The $14 billion SECU held its 70th annual meeting Oct. 9 at the Sheraton Hotel at Four Seasons in Greensboro, N.C. Attendees participated in a series of educational breakout sessions. Each session concluded with an open forum for volunteer feedback and discussion.
During a lively pre-meeting presentation, Tom Glatt, president/CEO of Continental FCU, reminded attendees of the importance of credit union ownership and the cooperative spirit. In the spring, Continental was involved in an unprecedented scenario with Wings Financial FCU, which sought a merger even though Continental's board refused the proposal several times.
Meanwhile, SECU's Advisory Boards are made up of approximately 1,800 volunteer members who represent each of its 214 branches statewide. The boards also serve as ambassadors in their communities, according to the CU.
"As an advocate for my credit union, I hope the news of the many positive SECU initiatives will spread well beyond the borders of North Carolina and provide examples for other credit unions to follow," said Jim Roberts, Raleigh-Hammond Road Advisory Board member.
On the suggestions received from the advisory boards, immediate past Chairman of SECU's Board of Directors David King, said "This feedback helps us keep the credit union on the right track–doing the right thing for our membership and for the citizens of North Carolina."
SECU serves more than 1.4 million members.
