MIRAMAR, Fla. — Eastern Financial Florida Credit Union President/CEO Stephen McGill has received the prestigious Diamond Award for 2007.
The South Florida Business Journal presents the award each year to a select group of South Florida business leaders who exemplify leadership, integrity, perseverance and teamwork. McGill was one of nine executives honored this year.
"I am honored to accept the Diamond Award," said McGill. "It's something I will share with all 700 of our employees who work hard each day trying to improve the financial well-being of the people we serve–our members."
McGill has headed Eastern Financial since 2004, but he has been at the credit union for more than 23 years serving in various roles. He has helped it grow from a financial co-op catering to airline employees to one of the largest credit unions in the country. Under McGill's watch, Eastern Financial has almost doubled its branch network and increased its membership base by 21%. McGill is striving towards his goal of becoming the largest credit union in the state of Florida. The credit union has a presence in all of Florida's major markets except for Orlando, but there are plans to expand there in the near future.
Under McGill's direction, Eastern Financial became the first credit union in South Florida to offer business loans to its members through a subsidiary that also offers commercial lending services to smaller credit unions. Earlier this year, the credit union expanded its investment and insurance offerings to help members plan for their retirements. And just last year, Eastern Financial was named by SHRM as one of the "Top 50 Small and Medium Sized Companies in America" to work for and named by the Principal Group as one of the best companies in the country for employee benefits.
In addition to his business accomplishments, McGill has been a leader in the community. He personally supports such organizations as March of Dimes, United Way, the MS 150 Bike Tour, and the credit union's own annual golf tournament that supports local children's charities.
