COLUMBUS, Ohio — Credit union folk may not be all that crazy about the "walk" but they are doing more than "talk" when it comes to fundraising for that Columbus-to-Cincinnati walkathon for Children's Miracle Network next week.
Indeed, organizer Bill Butler who single-handedly has put together the unusual "Marching Miles for Miracle Kids" CEO drive on April 1 said he's more than pleased to see how many CEOs and their CU employees have donated their cash and time to become "team leaders" for the drive.
That's the case even though many CEOs have actually skipped donning walking shoes, jeans and maybe rain ponchos to participate in the 10-mile-a-day walk traversing 180 miles visiting CU branches and children's hospitals along the way.
The "Miracle March" ends up April 19 at the Cincinnati convention center for the annual meeting of the Ohio Credit Union League.
Butler is counting on maximum media coverage of the walkathon to demonstrate how CUs are committed to helping local communities and civic well being as part of the "people helping people" message.
So far, the "Marching Miles" campaign has already raised $24,000 from 189 sponsors and that's since the CU solicitations began in earnest last month, said Butler, who also is president/CEO of Ohio Healthcare Federal Credit Union in Dublin. The "team leaders" helping collect donations across the state have included representatives of chapters in the Ohio league, said Butler. "They've done a really super job," said Butler noting that his walkathon is getting full support of CUNA and CU committees in CMN involved in putting on the Cherry Blossom 10K Run which kids off on the walkathon's starting day, April 1.
The goal for the campaign is $75,000 and so far 50 CU executives have signed up to walk the first leg of the trip from a children's hospital in Dublin to a CU branch in Plains City. After that, daily stops will be made in Urbana, Springfield, Xenia, Dayton and finally Cincinnati, he said. –jrubenscut@aol.com
