COLUMBUS, Ga. -- One day after deadly tornadoes tore through parts of Georgia and Alabama, TIC Federal Credit Union has started rebuilding one of its branches damaged by the quick-moving storms. Tornadoes leveled homes and businesses and killed more than 20 people in both states on March 1. Eight students died when a roof at Enterprise High School fell on top of them as they took cover from the destructive twisters. President Bush visited both states March 3 to assess the damage and declared several counties disaster areas. Meanwhile, the $186 million TIC FCU reported that its North branch sustained roof and window damage. Equipment and furniture inside the branch were also damaged. However, the building has been secured and repairs have already started. "Our most important consideration is the safety of our employees and members and we are thankful that there were no injuries," said Janet Davis, president/CEO. "While the branch did sustain considerable damage, the bricks and mortar can be replaced."

Davis said the CU is aiming to have the branch up and running in four to six weeks. The damaged branch had just been renovated and reopened in October 2006. Members are being directed to TIC FCU's other six branches as well as online banking. Members' safety deposit boxes have been secured, Davis added.

Several businesses in the area were also damaged by the tornadoes including a restaurant and a church.

TIC FCU is the only CU that has reported any major damage, said Anita Paul, director of communications at the Georgia Credit Union Affiliates. Several in the area, including TIC FCU, closed early the day the tornadoes were headed to the area, Paul said. One other reported a power outage, but electricity has since been restored.

GCUA's foundation is ready to offer CUs assistance, Paul said. Ironically, one of the affiliates' staffers is from Enterprise, Ala., another area completely ravaged by the recent tornadoes, Paul said. --msamaad@cutimes.com
