GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation said last week it has set July 7-11 as the dates for its sponsorship of a special CU week at Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman with top CU executives signing up as volunteers to man food lines and help in children's programming and recreation.
"Our sponsorship comes during Spina Bifida Week in which credit unions in North and South Carolina will be asked to provide funding and volunteers for the camp," said John Slack, executive director of CCUF.
Credit unions have long been "strong supporters of Victory Junction, and we think this is something that people across the Carolinas will get very excited about," said Slack citing the $1.6 million raised from 2003-2006.
"When people think about how credit unions care in the two Carolinas, Victory Junction immediately comes to mind," he said. "The Foundation is happy to continue to offer a vehicle for people to express that caring."
One of the CU execs helping to recruit volunteers is Russ Easterling, the retired CEO of CPM Federal Credit Union in Charleston, S.C., who spends almost two months a year at the camp working in the kitchen.
"Let's say I do it because it really builds my self-esteem and makes me feel really great," said Easterling adding there is great satisfaction in seeing "the impact on the lives" of these chronically ill youngsters.
"Have you ever seen a kid ride a horse, catch a fish or wade in a pool for the very first time? Go to Victory Junction and you'll see this often and then you will truly understand why I, and others, volunteer," said Easterling.
