WASHINGTON — Credit unions' political might is certainly not in their purses, but in their numbers, congressional friends of credit unions reminded them as participants in CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference prepared to saturate Capitol Hill.
Congressman Rob Bishop commended credit unions' grassroots abilities. "It energized my campaign, not based on money, but it energized my campaign by focusing on individuals," he explained. Bishop added that he is not only "proud" of what credit unions do to empower consumers financially, but also in getting them politically active.
House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) commented, "The credit unions win in politics because you represent something far more important than money in our political system. You represent votes."
