WASHINGTON — No one has taken their bows yet for the Web site that takes a humorous swipe at the bankers, www.bankerspank.com, but the credit union community is certainly talking about it.
The site, which features what appear to be professionally produced vignettes spoofing the Mac/PC commercials, takes shots at the banker attacks on credit unions. One of these skits, entitled "I love you" spotlights a banker trying to tell his customers that he loves them "in a very real and legally binding sense," while it comes naturally to the credit union guy talking about his members.
Another portrays a banker sneezing into a $20 and yet another threatening to sue the credit union for nonsense reasons.
But alas efforts around the credit union community to uncover the identity behind BankerSpank have been fruitless thus far and the person(s) or entity(ies) behind it are not interested in getting kudos. An e-mail from comments@bankerspank.com responding to a Credit Union Times inquiry stated, "That's the question everyone is asking. But we don't need to take credit for anything. Just trying to do our part."
Now, the site has begun merchandising–t-shirts, hats, bags, sweatshirts, mugs are emblazoned with the BankerSpank logo and pithy anti-banker comments. "Hug a banker today. Get a tetanus shot tomorrow," one reads. Another: "Bankers are people too. (At least in theory.)" A request as to where the proceeds from the items will go was not returned as of press time.
The mystery seems to create as much buzz as the site itself and has marketers kicking themselves for not thinking of it first.
