ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) hosted gubernatorial candidate Peter Hutchinson at its office for a candidate forum on Oct. 3.

Hutchinson, an Independent, spoke about several main issues of his campaign, including health care, transportation, education and the environment. Although Hutchinson is not currently a credit union member, he said that he is an advocate of nonprofit organizations.

Hutchinson delved into the counterproductive nature of partisan politics and the benefits of the Independence Party, stating that he intends "to move the state forward in a different direction with a different focus." Independence Party candidates are not permitted to receive money from political action committees, corporations or special interest groups.

"It speaks volumes for the Minnesota credit union movement that our state's gubernatorial candidates recognize credit unions as an important stop on the campaign trail," said Peter Skaalen, MnCUN interim president.

Hutchinson is the second candidate to hold an event at MnCUN's office this year. Incumbent Governor Tim Pawlenty (R) visited with Minnesota credit unions in January.
