WESTBROOK, Me. – The Maine Credit Union League is constantly looking for ways to communicate and promote youth financial education in the state, and during Maine CU Youth Week April 23-29 the league's efforts got a boost through a significant increase in media coverage.

Prior to the state's CU Youth Week, which coincided with National CU Youth Week, the league in conjunction with the Maine Council on Economic Education, distributed the High School Financial Planning booklets to media outlets along with other youth financial education materials and information.

The league also coordinated a series of media releases and advisories during the entire month of April that highlighted the efforts of Maine's credit unions.

According to the Maine Credit Union League, all of the pre-Youth Week outreach efforts resulted in seven minutes or more on 14 radio stations in Maine during the morning listening hours, including appearances on the top-rated stations in three of Maine's four radio markets.

In addition, the league initiated two television news stories on youth financial education, at least 20 newspaper articles or briefs and radio news stories on seven stations covering all four of Maine's radio markets.

The league reports that at least 80% of Maine's credit unions celebrated Maine CU Youth Week in some manner. This represents about a 10% increase over 2005. -egbarr@earthlink.net
