WESTLANDS NAIROBI, Kenya – Beth Mukiri Muthuuri, 31, is married with two children and has worked for Afya SACCO Society, Ltd. for 12 years. She works in the headquarters office in Nairobi as a customer care officer. She wants to be a part of this peer education program, she says, "because of what's happening in our country. People are dying daily. I want to be equipped with skills so that I can train others on how to help stop this disease. I want to help people to value this disease and appreciate it like any other disease, and to change their negative perception of those who are living with HIV/AIDS. Through SACCOs, it is possible to curb HIV/AIDS by providing information to many people countrywide. For Afya SACCO, once we educate our members, spread of the disease will reduce, our membership base [which has been affected due to deaths related to HIV/AIDS] will be retained and payment of death claims will go down, hence making our SACCO stronger."
