WASHINGTON-At the start of the Nov. 3 hearing on the tax-exemption, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) expressed his displeasure with credit unions' countdown until his departure as the head of the committee. A front-page article in The Hill newspaper that day cited an e-mail from the Texas Credit Union League to its membership, stating, "Good news is at the end of next year, Bill Thomas will no longer be Chairman of that Committee (term expires), and a more credit-union friendly face is likely to take his place," the Oct. 27 e-mail read, according to The Hill. "The bad news is he has a year to pursue CUs if he chooses to." The article also quotes CUNA and NAFCU officials expressing their concern over the chairman's position on the tax-exemption at the time.
