CHICAGO – Schools, churches and some impoverished homes in Chicagoland will be the beneficiary of Alliant Credit Union's donation of 86 personal computers, 103 monitors, eight servers, a network hub and more. The $4.4 billion CU donated the used tech gear to the Computers for Schools Foundation (www.pcsforschools.org), which will refurbish and distribute it to schools, churches, charitable organizations and the homes of underprivileged children. In addition to helping a good cause, the CU gets the benefit of the foundation's technicians cleaning off the data on each hard drive to meet stringent Department of Defense certification standards. Laurie Wallace, senior network engineer at Alliant (www.alliantcreditunion.org), says some vendors charge $35 to $45 per computer for that service. “This was both the safest and most cost-effective way that we could donate our computers,” Wallace says. “It's also very much in line with Alliant's ongoing mission to support education, youth financial literacy and our partnership with the National PTA.”
