COLUMBIA, Md. – The Maryland Credit Union League is warning its credit unions against ATM theft, not just the theft of ATM numbers or cards or the so-called "skimming" thefts, but the actual theft of the machines themselves. The League pointed to recent incidents in Texas, California and North Carolina, where ATMs were stolen using backhoes, industrial tools and simple furniture dollies. The League urged credit unions to ensure their ATMs are secured/bolted according to manufacturers specifications and to consider upgrading to digital cameras that are focused on ATM equipment. Digital cameras directly download to a hard drive and provide substantial storage and access when needed.
