SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Golden 1 CU, the largest credit union in California and the fifth largest in the U.S. with more than $4 billion in assets, now has one more reason to celebrate – its membership has reached 500,000, almost double what it was in 1994. Chartered in 1933 as California State Employees Credit Union #1 by 11 members, the credit union changed its name to The Golden 1 Credit Union in 1976. The Golden 1 CU's field-of-membership has expanded from a single core sponsor, and it now includes several select employee groups, plus community charters in 22 California counties.
