WASHINGTON-CUNA has hired lobbyist and tax attorney J. Leon Peace, Jr. as its the new manager of legislative affairs. Since 1996, Peace has been senior counsel on tax legislation with the American Bankers Association (ABA), where he performed various services, including helping to design banks' Subchapter S tax protection legislation. He begins at CUNA June 3. Prior to his time at the ABA, Peace was tax/trade counsel and legislative director for the National Association of Home Builders. He also spent several years as a senior trial attorney with the Internal Revenue Service and worked in private practice, specializing in low-income housing tax credit transactions and financial services-related issues. Peace graduated with a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, and earned a law degree from North Carolina Central University and a Masters of Laws in taxation from Georgetown University.
