The weather may have been frightful but credit unions across a wide swath of the mid-continent from Chicago to Wichita, all buried under this week's monster blizzard of snow and ice, were getting back to normal in quick fashion Thursday.
All of the major league and trade groups in the Midwest and South re-opened their offices after nearly a two-day snow holiday.
"We still have five foot drifts but we all got to work today and I've heard of no collapsed roofs or calamities," said a spokesman for the Illinois Credit Union League, located in the Chicago suburb of Naperville.
Like others in business, thousands of CU executives whose CUs closed for the day managed to use Twitter, engage in cell phone communications and conduct routine business from home.
Even CUNA reported that technology came in handy for an orientation meeting of new CUNA board directors convened in Washington while the Madison office was closed.
"Madison's senior staff participated from home by phone and Internet, using technology that allowed them to advance and discuss their Power Point slides (which our board members could see on a video screen in the CUNA DC board room)," said Mark Wolf, senior vice president of communications. "The presentations ran on time and without a hitch. Our new board members were very appreciative of the extra effort put in by the Madison crew."
