DUBLIN, Ireland — NASCUS President/CEO Mary Martha Fortney and former NASCUS Chairman Roger Little, deputy commissioner of the Michigan Credit Union Division, joined regulators from 17 countries as well as representatives from NCUA and CUNA at the World Council of Credit Unions Regulators Roundtable that was held during the WOCCU 2006 World CU Conference here. In his presentation on “Creating an Environment that Allows Credit Unions to Compete,” Little discussed the importance of sound corporate governance practices; the potential effects of credit union competition on member benefits and credit union operations; and regulation in a competitive environment including higher expectations of boards and management. The agenda also included discussion on mergers and consolidations, capital for credit unions, risk assessment and sustainability of small credit unions. Fortney observed that, “The issues of international regulators face are not unlike challenges American regulators are addressing; many of the issues can be tacked on a global level for the greater good of the entire system.”
