MADISON, Wis. – Former CUNA Senior Vice President Mike Miller filed a complaint with the Madison Equal Employment Opportunities Commission claiming he was fired after complaining about comments he felt were inappropriate.

A four-day hearing at the EOC in Madison began on July 12. Miller claims he was fired on Sept. 9, 2004 after complaining about sexist, racist and homophobic remarks made by CUNA Chief Operating Officer John Franklin.

"CUNA prides itself on being a fair and equal opportunity employer. Our association treats all of our employees, who are our most valuable asset, with respect and any claims to the contrary are without merit. We are aggressively defending our organization against these allegations because they run completely counter to how we operate our business," said CUNA Vice President of Communications Pat Keefe.

"When all of the facts in this matter are presented, we are confident that the commission will agree and find the allegations to have no merit."

According to the EOC, the hearing is being held because after an initial investigation by the EOC probable cause was determined. The hearing examiner acts as a judge and makes a decision as to whether discrimination occurred. A decision could include make-whole provisions, including lost wages and other remedies.
