WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Employees of Choice One Community CU earned applause from Congressman Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.) for their participation in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and offering free assistance during tax season to lower-income families in the Greater Wilkes-Barre area.

This year's tax season marked the third time Choice One participated in the VITA Program.

Marketing Director Susan Bat and Branch Supervisor Donald Pientka helped prepare 128 returns this tax season totaling $138,830 in tax refunds. They were also able to calculate more than $10,000 in Pennsylvania Income Tax Forgiveness for 66 taxpayers.

Kanjorski commended COCCU employees "who donated their time and offered tax help to local taxpayers of modest income who typically could not afford to hire a tax professional."

He also applauded the CU for its success in using the Earned Income Tax Credit program and helping to obtain $41,246 in tax credits for 22 local taxpayers.

It's estimated that nationally between 15-20% of eligible taxpayers do not claim the EITC. -
