TEMPE, Ariz. – Shareholders of America West Airlines' parent company recently approved the carrier's proposed merger with US Airways. A bankruptcy judge also approved the merger on Sept. 16 of US Airways Group Inc.'s reorganization plan. Nearly half of Clearview FCU's 76,000 member base is affiliated with US Airways. The $591 million CU has said the merger could be good for those members because it may allow them to keep their current jobs. US Airways filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in September 2004. That same month, the former US Airways FCU expanded to a community charter and changed its name to Clearview FCU. Along the way, Clearview FCU has assisted many of its members who either work for the airline, are family members of employees or retired employees through extended loan payment schedules, refinancing and financial counseling. The US Airways/America West merger would create the nation's sixth largest airline. The week of Sept. 12 saw a number of shakeups in the airline industry. On Sept. 14, both Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection
