DURHAM, N.C. - Self-Help Credit Union recently provided financial intervention for two conservation groups that bought 1,568 acres of woodlands here possibly, preventing the state from developing it. The Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and The Nature Conservancy paid $16 million to hold the property called "World's Edge." The woodlands are home to waterfalls and rare animals and plants. Earlier this year, state officials had proposed to build a new park here. The $188 million Self-Help CU, along with the Open Space Institute and private donors, provided the financing to help the conservation groups purchase the land. State officials say they will still apply for grant money to help buy the land.
