WESTBROOK, Me. - New products and services offered by Maine's credit unions allowed them to post consistent, healthy growth for the first half of 2005. The Maine Credit Union League reported that its 74 affiliated CUs showed growth in every category including assets, membership, shares and loans. During the six-month period, combined assets of Maine's CUs grew 2.97%, nearly $114 million to $3.94 billion. Savings were up 3.12% to more than $3.3 billion, and membership saw a net gain of just over 3,000 members to a new high of 603,337 consumers in Maine belonging to a credit union. The League reports that nationally, Maine has been ranked as the fifth strongest credit union state for the past three years. Nearly one in two Maine residents uses a credit union.
