Maine League Scores Five-Year Record Turnout at Annual Conference

WESTBROOK, Me. – Nearly 750 representatives from credit unions throughout Maine – the highest turnout in more than five years – were on hand last week at the Maine Credit Union League's Annual Meeting & Convention to hear Gov. John Baldacci call CUs "a vital part in helping fuel Maine's economy and a group of people who are committed to helping their fellow Mainers." Gov. Baldacci was one of several elected state and federal officials who addressed conferees. Also attending were Congressman Michael Michaud (D-Me.), the only board member of a U.S. credit union to be elected to Congress in 2002, and Congressman Thomas Allen (D-Me.). Michaud told credit union attendees that, "Credit unions are more than just financial institutions; they are the fabric of the communities they serve." Allen recognized CUs' community service efforts including the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger and Tsunami Relief. All three pledged to protect credit unions' tax exempt, not-for-profit status.
