Seeking to liven up International Credit Union Week, the Ohio Credit Union League is going for the "reality" show gambit with a three-city financial literacy program.

The unusual "Finances 101″ venture is slated to bring 1,000 high school students to sites in three Ohio cities to take part in a three-hour reality game that "teaches personal money management skills critical to the financial success of Ohio's youth."

In a flyer sent to the news media, the league explained, "The financial health of Ohio's youngest citizens is at risk, making financial education an important aspect of a well-rounded education."

The high school students are being bused into meeting halls in Columbus, Dayton and Toledo on separate days during ICU Week.

A league spokesman said staff decided that "while the food drive the last few years for ICU Day was good, we needed to do something a little more exciting this year and since financial literacy so important we chose this kind of event."

At each of the events, "students will walk through a hands-on, life-size 'game of life,' where they receive a salary, pay bills, make difficult financial decisions, and encounter unexpected financial setbacks and gains," the league said.

Finances 101, the league said, "teaches students, through first-hand experience, life's important financial lessons – budgeting, saving, and differing wants from needs."

The exact title of the event is "Finances 101: Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk." The event in Columbus slated Oct. 20 is being held in the downtown Columbus Convention Center with local media invited to watch. The league said it is expecting 200 students for the Columbus program.
