The $409 million Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union recently teamed up with the Small Business Administration and others to encourage business start-ups and expansions.

Established business owners and entrepreneurs were invited to hear from officials with the local SBA office, college advisers, state economic development office and the chamber of commerce.

Among the guest speakers were Lisa Gonzalez, business development specialist for the SBA, Awilda Irizarry, business adviser and the SBA's Small Business Development Center at Salem State College. Matt Collins, vice president of the Granite State Development Corp., which offers the SBA's 504 loan program, Charlie Warner of the Procurement Technical Assistance Center and Peter Morbeck representing the Service Corp of Retired Executives, a branch of the SBA, offered their expertise at the free seminar.

"We serve a wide range of businesses at the credit union, but they all have one thing in common-the need for resources to help their businesses survive and thrive in a tough economy. I think we gave them some valuable tools to do just that," said Richard Hanlon, vice president of business lending at the Lawrence, Mass.-based Merrimack Valley FCU.
