AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Gov. John Baldacci joined by two of the state's leading Congressmen heaped praise on Maine credit unions this month for their community service role during the 69th annual convention of the Maine Credit Union League here.
"Maine's credit unions have a strong friend in the governor's office, and I will do whatever I can to assist credit unions in serving their members," Baldacci, a Democrat, told the 700 attendees.
The Maine chief executive suggested that CU staffers contact his office "anytime with an issue concerning" their industry because "what credit unions do is important and deserves support."

Last March Baldacci made a rare appearance on the floor of the Maine House to personally acknowledge the work of credit unions during Maine Credit Union Day. The governor has long praised CUs for their work in raising funds to fight hunger in the state.
Also paying tribute to CU contributions and service in their speeches were U.S. Reps. Michael Michaud and Tom Allen, both Democrats.
Michaud, the nation's only sitting member of Congress who has served as a credit union director, said lawmakers listen to the leaders of credit unions "because of the values that credit unions stand for."
"From having fewer fees to providing loans to people who had nowhere else to turn, there is a difference between credit unions and banks, and that difference benefits Maine consumers," said Michaud.
Allen also cited the $2.6 million raised by Maine CUs since 1990 to help end hunger in the state calling the effort "one that I find remarkable and worthy of our thanks."
