NEWPORT, Calif. — It was yet another successful sail for Honda Federal Credit Union CEO Jim Updike and his credit union crew.
The team finished the 125-mile Newport to Ensenada, Mexico International Yacht Race in 32 hours and 35 minutes. Updike says the time would've been better, but some seven miles off Dana Point, Calif. a seal boarded the yacht for a seven-hour nap.
For the past five years the all-credit union crew has chartered a boat and sailed in the annual competition that attracts more entries than any other international yacht race.
This year's crew included Tim Sidley, WesCorp; Don Gensler, CUNA Mutual; Brian Scott, The Members Group; Chris Gunnare, The Members Group; Matt Flynn, The Members Group; Todd Lane, WesCorp; and Charlie Clarke, LBS Financial Credit Union.
By successfully braving the high seas the team raised $8,000 for the RMJ Foun-dation, which promotes credit union education and financial literacy. Richard Myles Johnson, known to many as Dick Johnson, was a pioneer in the corporate credit union network and long-time CEO of WesCorp.
Over the years the team has helped raise a total of $45,000 for the RMJ Foundation. All the expenses for the race are borne by the crew leaving 100% of donations going to the RMJ Foundation.
