KANKAKEE, Ill. – You could say Kankakee County Federal Employees Federal Credit Union CEO Carol Hunger was born into motorcycles. “Since my father collected them we grew up with the bikes,” said Hunger. “When he died my brothers and I each inherited one of his four motorcycles.” Since that time her collection has grown to include three Harley Davidsons, four Hondas and a Whizzer. Her collection includes the rare 1913 Model C Harley Davidson restored by her father over 50 years ago. “According to Harley Davidson records, there were only 2,000 motorcycles built in 1913. One thousand were belt drive and 1,000 were chain drive. The Model C was the deluxe model with a carbide headlight and taillight. We have never heard of another one just like ours,” said Hunger. Their Model C has been featured in calendars and took first place honors at Sturgis giving Hunger and her husband Adolf the opportunity to meet Willie G., the grandson of Harley-Davidson Motor Company founder William A. Davidson. Hunger and her husband also have a few Honda Goldwings and are members of the Goldwing club. They carve out time to ride every Tuesday night with the group of friends to different restaurants. She says while showing and rebuilding bikes is great, nothing beats riding them. “It’s funny my husband had never ridden a motorcycle until he met me. My father taught him on a 1948 Harley Davidson Springer,” said Hunger. “We just came back from Tennessee and North Carolina and put on about 2,000 miles in a week.” The love of motorcycles is truly a family affair and although one of her sons prefers computers to riding, between her brothers and herself and her husband they own some 25 motorcycles. Two sheds and two 2.5 car garages house her bikes while giving her the space to work on them as well. “My husband retired in January and we’re ready to put a Harley Sprint made in Italy back together and it has been really interesting finding parts. It took us a few years just to get a starter for it but it’s been a great way to meet people,” said Hunger. So with all those bikes does she have a favorite? “The Honda Goldwing without a doubt,” said Hunger. “It is a much more comfortable ride, it has a bigger engine, it’s quiet and to me it is the `Cadillac’ of motorcycles.”
