PENRITH SYDNEY, Australia - Rugby Fans of the Penrith Panthers had mixed reactions to the renaming of their stadium. The new name will be Credit Union Australia Stadium Penrith after the country's largest credit union. This is the first time the stadium has had corporate sponsorship and is the home training ground of an A grade team in western Sydney. The Panthers play home games at the stadium throughout the season. The deal is for two years. It is the first time the stadium has had a corporate sponsor name since it opened in 1967. "Credit Union Australia Stadium Penrith! Geez thats a long name," one fan posted on the club's Web site. "There's no way I'm calling it Credit Union Australia Stadium Penrith," another wrote. "Maybe we can abbreviate it to CUA Stadium? Still would have preferred Penrith Football Stadium though, but as others have said if it's for the betterment of our club, so be it," a fan signing himself `D' wrote. Most agreed if it helped the club than they could live with the change. About 15,000 fans attend each home game. The team this year had a crack at the finals. Management of both the team and credit union however were pleased. "CUA has always placed significant importance on community support and involvement and by sponsoring the Penrith Panthers football club we are cementing a relationship with an organization that has the same standards. We also hope that our relationship with Penrith Panthers and the naming rights to the stadium will help Credit Union Australia increase its brand awareness right across the Eastern Seaboard," CUA Managing Director Gary Olrich said. The stadium and the Panthers are located where most CUA branches are. Both organizations are active in community events. "This is a very exciting development for our club and our city," Panthers Group Chairman Barry Walsh added. "CUA talked to other clubs before deciding on Penrith and one of the factors in the decision was the community role played by our Panthers on the Prowl foundation. It turned out that we have very similar values. Sponsorship deals such as this help to secure the future of our football club," Barry said. Panthers on the Prowl support school children's sports in schools. Penrith City Council, which is the stadium trustee, approved the renaming. [email protected]
