WATERLOO, Iowa – Consumers here saving towards their first home, college expenses or starting or expanding a business, may be able to get each dollar they save matched through a popular savings program. Through Operation Works’ Building Assets for the Future program, the Iowa Social and Economic Development (ISED) program along with the Iowa League of Credit Unions, John Deere Community CU and several other local and state partners, individual retirement accounts (IRAs) will be offered. Through IRAs, deposits made by account holders will be matched dollar for dollar by ISED. Participants are required to complete financial education classes that aim to help set up realistic savings goals. The ISED is looking for people who can save at least $500 over the next five months, said Opportunity Works Project Coordinator Stacy Van Gorp. An extended program will challenge participants to save $3,000 per person or $8,000 per household over three- to five-years. Other Building Assets for the Future partners are Operation Threshold, Mid Iowa Community Action, Cedar Valley’s Promise, Iowa State Extension, US Bank, Northeast Iowa Food Bank and the Cedar Valley United Way.
