New NAFCU Robbery DVD Steals From a Pro
8/12/2009

NAFCU's latest training DVD relies partially on the insights from a former bank robber to help credit unions prepare for and prevent robberies.

“Deterring and Responding to Robberies,” in part, draws on the experiences of Troy Evans, a former five-time bank robber. He committed robberies in three states and served over seven years of a thirteen year sentence in federal prison, according to The Speakers Group, an agency representing motivational speakers.

The video also contains information from a law enforcement officer, security consultant, the CEO of a large financial institution, and a teller who was formerly a robbery victim, according to NAFCU.

“The safety of credit union staff and members is a paramount concern,” said NAFCU President Fred Becker. “Through this DVD, they will be educated on how to handle a robbery, safeguard their well-being and survive the situation successfully.”

NAFCU cited FBI statistics that there were 1,498 robberies of financial institutions between Jan. 1 and March 31 of this year, and that credit unions were the sites for 117 of them.

    • The FBI has a program called SafeCatch that is proving to be one of the most effective methods for deterring (not just mitigating the severity of) robberies. Employees trained in SafeCatch learn to spot suspicious “customers." Before a robbery occurs, employees proactively engage the person.
