    TruMark Financial Credit Union, Trevose, Pa., celebrated the opening of its Eastern North Philadelphia branch in a neighborhood that lacked a financial institution for 60 years with a community event. People enjoyed free food, iPod raffles, giveaway items and entertainment, including trained cockatiels, a caricaturist and a clown who performed magic tricks and sculpted balloons.

    Redwood Credit Union, Santa Rosa, Calif., participated in the 28th Annual Butter & Eggs Day Parade in Petaluma. The parade’s theme, “Recycle, Reuse & Remember,” allowed RCU to show its commitment to sustainability with an eco-conscious, earth-friendly parade entry that included a hybrid vehicle provided by RCU Auto Services. In addition, RCU volunteers handed out recycled shopping totes to spectators.
    Robins Federal Credit Union, Warner Robins, Ga., participated in a Rebuilding Together Warner Robins event. Credit union staff members gave up a Saturday to do major yard work, painting and gardening for a local resident. This is the eighth consecutive year that Robins Federal Credit Union has participated in Rebuilding Together Warner Robins. To date, it has donated a total of $70,000 to the organization.

    Santa Clara County Federal Credit Union, San José, Calif., distributed over 750 books that were donated by staff and their families to various organizations throughout Santa Clara County. The donated books will benefit the San Jose Public Library–Alum Rock Branch, Gateway School in Gilroy, Calif., and South County Community School in San Martin, Calif.

    Shell Federal Credit Union, Deer Park, Texas, announced that Susan Thomas of Pasadena and David Wilson of Crosby each received $5,000 from the credit union as part of its “You’re Invited” campaign. During the campaign, Shell FCU invited the community to open a new checking and savings account with for a chance to win $5,000. The credit union also offered both existing and new members a chance to win $5,000 by closing an auto loan with SFCU for at least $10,000 during that same promotion period.
    Advance Financial Federal Credit Union, Schererville, Ind., took part in the March of Dimes’ March for Babies 2009. Team AFFCU participated in “Blue Jeans for Babies” days, solicited donations to the March of Dimes and sold collectible plush toys featuring the credit union’s Kids’ Club mascot, Moe Monkey, and a bean bag bear in its three offices in the weeks leading up to the event. As a result, the team raised $1,632 to help combat premature birth.

    Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union, Scranton, Pa., participated in a moonlight 5K walk/run to benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center of Northeast, Pa. Tobyhanna FCU Chief Financial Officer Janelle Kaczmarek, W-B Branch Manager Pearl Pierce and Barbara Kilgallon represented the credit union at the center’s annual fundraising event, which benefits child victims of physical and sexual abuse and neglect. The credit union donated and served chips and 500 hot dogs at the event.

    Heritage Federal Credit Union, Newburgh, Ind., partnered with the Salvation Army in packing up and disbursing 300 backpacks to distribute to high school students in Warrick and Vanderburgh counties.

    Fort Bragg Federal Credit Union, Fayetteville, N.C., collected school supplies, healthy snacks and toys for the children of Afghanistan. Credit union employees, members and friends across the United States donated a total of 1,458 gallon-size plastic bags filled with these items. The credit union hosted the Pencils for Peace campaign, teaming up with soldiers overseas who will be distributing the bags to young students in Afghanistan. The credit union also shipped an extra 100 pounds of notebook paper, 45 pounds of pencils, 30 pounds of notebooks and 40 pounds of crayons.

    SAC Federal Credit Union, Bellevue, Neb., in partnership with the Strategic Air & Space Museum, announced the opening of “Dreamers Gallery,” the latest addition to the permanent collection of hands-on educational exhibits at the museum. The credit union’s youth account mascot, Dollar Dog, participated in the ribbon cutting and passed out treats to visiting children.
    America’s First Federal Credit Union, Birmingham, Ala., partnered with NBC-13 and Western Supermarkets for a Can-A-Thon benefiting the United Way Community Food Bank in Birmingham and the Bay Area Food Bank in Mobile. Western Supermarkets sold pre-made bags of the food bank’s most needed items for only $5. Collection barrels were located at each of America’s First’s 17 branches. By the end of the campaign, more than two tons of food had been collected.
    Workers’ Credit Union, Fitchburg, Mass., participated in Relay for Life. The credit union’s team picked a fundraising goal of $15,000 to commemorate its fifteenth year participating in the annual American Cancer Society event. Nancy Sequin, assistant vice president/human resources, organized the event and 54 employees and their families participated in the walk. The credit union surpassed its goal by nearly $2,500.
