WASHINGTON -- Credit unions wondering whether to go wireless might consider this: A new survey shows that 58% of adult Americans have used a cell phone or personal digital assistant to do at least one of 10 different mobile, nonvoice activities. Those figures come from the Pew Internet Project's December 2007 survey of a sample of 2,054 adult Americans, which included 500 respondents contacted on their cell phones. The same survey found that 36% said it would be difficult to give up their wireless e-mail device, compared with only 6% who gave the same answer in a similar survey five years ago. The latest survey was taken Oct. 24-Dec. 2, 2007 and had a margin of error for the entire sample of plus or minus 2 percentage points, organization said....

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Ever wonder what fraudsters pay each other for the identifying data they purloin from people over the Web? Those numbers were included in a new report from Forrester Research about the increasing threat that fraud is posing to online commerce. Based on research from Symantec, the report said black market prices ranged from 50 cents for a credit card number to $150 for a full identity. The think firm's report concluded that growing sophistication in dealing with fraud will only manage to keep losses at current levels. "To substantially deter fraud, organizations will ultimately need a new approach to establishing and using identity online," writes analyst Geoffrey Turner....

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- They don't want to play games. The older respondents to a Forrester Research survey made that clear in their opinions on what matters to them on an online banking site. Only 1% of "Older Boomers" responded that such a thing would be of interest to them, compared with 4% in the entire group of more than 5,000 respondents in the recent survey. And only 9% of that group wanted to be able to personalize the site, compared with 25% of members of Generations X and Y. What they seemed to agree on was the desirability of users reviews and ratings....

By any standards, this is perhaps the toughest time ever to run a credit union. Tight net interest margins, rising labor costs, ever-increasing competition, and flat membership growth all combine to create an extremely challenging environment in which to operate. It's precisely this kind of environment that proves the wisdom of the old adage: Work smarter, not harder....

Letters to the editor
Thanks for a great column (CU Times, March 26, 2008) on working with the media. This is so important for credit unions to know. It is my firm belief that media coverage is the only way credit unions will change perceptions, and it's encouraging to see more and more credit unions waking up to the need for a full PR program. Having said that, I'm going to question some of the points made....

They've done it before and they'll do it again. Picture it, early 1991. Congress is just returning from winter break and, boom, the Deposit Insurance and Regulatory Reform Act (H.R. 6) is introduced by Democratic Congressman Henry Gonzalez (Texas). The bill would, among other things, fold all the financial institution regulators into one....

We know the credit union industry is chock full of high quality meetings and events....
