UW Credit Union Latest Apple Pay Signee
Add the $1.9 billion UW Credit Union to the short but growing list of credit unions that are going live with Apple Pay.
The 200,000 member-cooperative in Madison, Wis., said it will go live Dec. 15, just in time for holiday shopping.
The decision to offer Apple Pay was an easy one, according to UW CU.
“More than 50% of our mobile log-ins originate from iPhones,” Lisa Girdharry, the credit union’s chief marketing officer, said. “While we know that Apple Pay is currently only available for iPhone 6 models, more members will have access to the service when they upgrade their mobile devices or purchase an Apple Watch.”
Girdharry said offering Apple Pay is part of a larger initiative to improve members’ overall banking experience.
She also noted that Apple Pay will actually be available to the credit union in early December.
“We have the ability to go live in early December,” Girdharry said. “However, it’s our practice to do internal testing and an employee and friends and family pilot to ensure a positive, seamless member rollout experience.”
Girdharry said despite debit card issues reported by some institutions, both debit and credit card programs will be available at the same time.
UW CU is one of just a handful of credit unions expected to go live with Apple Pay before the end of the year.
