Michael's, an arts and crafts supply retailer with more than 1,100 stores, is the most recent retailer to be targeted by card data thieves.
In a Jan. 25 letter posted on its website, Michael's CEO Chuck Rubin alerted consumers.
“We recently learned of possible fraudulent activity on some U.S. payment cards that had been used at Michaels, suggesting we may have experienced a data security attack,” Rubin said in the letter. “We are working closely with federal law enforcement and are conducting an investigation with the help of third-party data security experts to establish the facts.”
Media outlets had reported that financial institutions had begun to trace card fraud cases to cards used at the store and the U.S. Secret Service had confirmed that it is investigating a possible breach.
