In September, a group of like-minded credit unions gathered to “scream” about the prospects in today’s health care fields.
Opportunity Screams, the conference theme, was taken from the title of keynote speaker Tom Asacker’s book “Opportunity Screams: Unlocking Hearts and Minds in Today’s Idea Economy.”
The Healthcare Credit Union Association , an organization of credit unions that serve hospitals and health care network employees, held its annual conference Sept. 18-20 in Las Vegas and listened to Asacker’s ideas of becoming unstuck while offering exciting realities for their employees, members and brands.
“We’re proud of the growth of our membership and the engagement of all the executives that come to this conference,” said Charlie Collura, HCUA board chair and CEO of the $160 million Healthcare and Municipal Employees' Credit Union in Ontario, Canada. “We always walk away with tactics to grow our membership and enrich their lives.”
The conference also included an update by Martha Ninichuk, deputy director of the NCUA’s Office of Small Credit Union Initiatives; a regional HCUA meeting led by Carol Bayreuther, CEO of the $42 million Hartford Healthcare FCU; and “Marketing in Healthcare” by Robert York, chief marketing officer of the $64 million CalCom Federal Credit Union in Torrance, Calif.
The conference was the organization’s seventh, it said, and it now has nearly 50 members.
The other HCUA officers are vice chair Shirley Cate, president/ CEO of the $126 million Providence FCU in Milwaukie Ore., secretary Linda White, CEO of the $52 million United Health CU, Burlingame, Calif., treasurer Todd Nelson, SVP of the $272 million HealthCare Associates CU in Naperville, IL., and director at large John Saatela, CEO of the $42 million CarePoint FCU in Anaheim, Calif.
