Matz Appointed Vice Chair of NeighborWorks America

Community development organization NeighborWorks America Friday announced that it has appointed NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz to the post of vice chair of its board.

Matz replaces Gigi Hyland on the NeighborWorks board; Hyland was board chair when she resigned from the NCUA Board in October.

Determined by statute, NeighborWorks America’s board consists of the heads of federal financial regulatory agencies and HUD.

Matz previously served as vice chair of NeighborWorks America’s board in 2004 during her first term on the NCUA board.

“I feel honored to return to the NeighborWorks America Board and continue their outstanding work to ensure individuals and families have access to safe, affordable homes,” Matz said in a statement.

“NeighborWorks America has grown tremendously since my first term on the board,” she said. “Working with community development financial institutions and other leading community-based organizations, NeighborWorks America fulfills a vital mission and makes a lasting impact that benefits consumers and our nation’s economy.”

As vice chair, Matz will support Chair Sarah Bloom Raskin from the Federal Reserve to provide strategic oversight in support of NeighborWorks America’s mission. The organization creates opportunities for people to improve their lives and strengthen their communities by providing access to homeownership and to safe and affordable rental housing.

In the past five years, NeighborWorks organizations have generated more than $19.5 billion in reinvestment in these communities. NeighborWorks America said it now supports a network of more than 235 nonprofits, located in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

“Director Matz is a public service veteran who has tremendous Capitol Hill experience and oversees federally insured credit unions,” said NeighborWorks America CEO Eileen Fitzgerald.
