Hurricane Sandy: New Jersey Credit Unions Continue Slow Recovery

New Jersey’s largest credit union, the $2.2 billion Affinity Federal Credit Union in Basking Ridge, said it now has 10 of its 15 branches open that will be operating under regular business hours 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The remaining five branches are still closed because of no power.

Other New Jersey credit unions are also opening some branches with limited hours or limited services, while some credit unions said they will remain closed because of no power, according to report from the New Jersey Credit Union League.

So when will New Jersey have full power?

“Our best forecast as of now (Nov. 1) is that we will have virtually all of our impacted customers restored to service within the next seven to 10 days,” PSE&G , New Jersey’s largest power provider, said in a statement. “The majority of customers will be restored before then.  There may still be isolated pockets of customers who have individual flooding or downed line issues that may take slightly longer.”

About 781,000 utility customers are without power, according to Newark, N.J-based PSE&G. About 950,000 utility customers have had their power restored following Hurricane Sandy.  The storm impacted 1.7 million of PSE&G’s 2.2 million electric customers.

At 5 p.m. Thursday, the New Jersey Credit Union League released additional updates of credit union operations throughout the state. Some of the latest developments, which are posted online, include:
