The Pennsylvania Credit Union Association said its office in Harrisburg, Pa. was closed Monday after the Pennsylvania governor and the mayor of Harrisburg declared a state of emergency due to Hurricane Sandy, said PCUA Communications Specialist Janet Johnson.

The Delaware Credit Union League office in New Castle, Del., will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, said Jane Bailey, executive vice president of DCUL. In addition, Delaware Governor Jack A. Markell issued a level 2 driving restrictions, meaning the states roadways have been closed to all traffic except essential personnel, which includes those who are maintaining core functions of government, health and safety.
“We are monitoring our credit unions and asking about their plans,” said Bailey. “We hope that folks will use their best judgment and make their safety and that of their staffs their priority.”

For the safety of employees and members, the $1.9 billion Chartway Federal Credit Union in Virginia Beach, Va., is delaying opening its branches and operations in Virginia, North Carolina and Rhode Island until noon Monday, said Heidi E. Worker, Chartway’s corporate communications director. However, Chartway’s 24/7 call center will be available to members as well as online banking services and ATMs.
Worker said Chartway’s branches located on the BAE shipyard in Norfolk and C9 on the Norfolk Naval Base will be closed Monday because of business and base limitations. Chartway’s branch at Newark (N.J.) Liberty International Airport also will be closed Monday.
“Although North Carolina is being hit hard (by the storm), our branch locations have not suffered any major damage,” Worker said. “We are closely monitoring each site, however.”
Worker said the credit union is prepared to help members who may face hardships because of the storm by refinancing existing loans to reduce payments or terms and deferring or skipping loan payments.
