All for Nadia: Slide Show

Following a large community effort to raise the funds needed to build 8-year-old Nadia Zaichenko her very own backyard plays set complete with wheelchair paths to allow her to enjoy her backyard unassisted, Nadia cuts the ribbon on her new gift.

An 8-year-old, wheelchair bound Chesapeake, Va., girl now has her own playset, specially accessible for her, thanks to a local Boy Scout troop, church and the We Promise Foundation, the foundation of the $1.9 billion Chartway Federal Credit Union in Virginia Beach.

Nadia Zaichenko was born with spina bifida and has been unable to play on most playgrounds until now. A community effort was started to help her and the final $1,500 of the $7,000 effort came from the foundation. Enough in donations came in, in fact, to also pay for the installation of wheelchair paths to give Nadia more freedom around her new playset.

“It brings us great joy to know that because of the incredible generosity of this community, Nadia will be able to enjoy the simple childhood moments that she has dreamed of,” said John Blum, chairman of the We Promise Foundation.  “We are honored to be able to give her the gift of play and mobility that every child deserves.”
