NCUF Amazed at Wildfire Support

A National Credit Union Foundation spokesperson said Friday the organization is greatly heartened by the outpouring of industry support, specifically $25,000, for credit union victims of the Colorado wildfires.

“That’s pretty impressive, amazing, coming at a time when many people are on vacation,” said Christopher Morris, NCUF director of communications. “Credit unions have stepped up yet again to help those in need.”

Since the outbreak of catastrophic fires early last month near Fort Collins and later near Colorado Springs, the NCUF has been making an online appeal through its CUAid vehicle, which permits secure acceptance of credit donations, wire transfers and mail contributions from volunteers and members.

Colorado credit unions reported that many of their members lost homes and other property in the region. No damage has been reported to credit union branches.

Several credit unions dispatched volunteer crews to aid firefighters with water and supplies, as well as those displaced by the fires in Red Cross shelters.

Late press reports show the Waldo Canyon fire near Colorado Springs is now 90% contained. It is the most destructive fire in the state’s history, destroying 350 homes, scorching 20,000 acres and forcing 32,000 evacuations.
